Seasonal American Fare with a Southern influence is what you can expect from this Williamsburg, Brooklyn gem (or should we say star.) You walk into a dimly lit place with booths and tables, soft music and a ton of awesome foodie hipsters (who knew skinny jeans and Southern food would end up in the same sentence.) Most of these buttered and battered dishes come in piping hot cast iron skillets and the drinks are served in mason jars. You can expect a finger-lickin’, stick-to-your-ribs kinda meal, so don’t come if you are dieting or watching your girlish figure.

If you’ve never tried pig tails (not the ones you put in your hair), you need to cross this off your foodie bucket list. This place does them right. It’s not a fairy-tail. They are crispy fried to perfection. Another perfect item, is the bacon jalapeño cornbread. It comes out piping hot in a cast iron skillet and it’s a cornbread/cake hybrid. You slather butter all over this and it’s an artery-clogging good time. After that, let’s talk bone marrow. Not everyone is an adventurous eater, but if you’ve never had bone marrow this is a great place to pop your marrow cherry as it happens to be one of my favorite places to get it. It’s rich, buttery and smokey and it comes with a side of Texas toast points for you to spread it all over. After you’ve lathered up your toast with it, top it with their red onion jam and a fresh parsley leaf, sprinkle a little sea salt on each bite and you’ve created the perfect layered flavor balance (you’ll want to smack the person sitting next to you it’s so good). After smacking your neighbor with excitement, you will want to try the lip-smacking meatloaf sandwich. We grew up on this crap (ah, Meatloaf, he would do anything for love).  I would do anything for this sandwich. Just get one.

Chef/owners Joaquin Baca, Simon Gibson and William Reed are doing Southern food justice and have reminded us of how important it is sometimes to sit down, gorge ourselves on comfort food, and stuff our faces till you want to puke. It’s ok, it’s worth it. Their menu is solid and you can literally order almost anything and be really excited about it. Wash it all down with a bloody mary made with beef stock and pickled green beans. Go Brooklyn Star gazing. You’ll like this place.
