Leave it to the Italians to create a record-breaking pizza. Viva Italia!
The theme for Expo Milano 2015 is “Feeding the Planet: Energy for Life.” Seems like Italy took that rather literally. The maestro’s of Margherita crafted a pie (resembling a saucy slip-n-slide) that officially broke the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest pizza.
The pie, basically a red carpet of rapture, measured out to 1.5 kilometers (5,233 feet) — that’s nearly a mile long. It took the careful attention of sixty pizza makers at the world’s fair to put together all of the doughy, saucy, gooey-cheesy goodness.
Just in case you’re planning on whipping up one of your own, you’ll need over two tons of tomato sauce and half a ton of mozzarella cheese. Oh, and 800 tables for the dough to stretch across and moving ovens to cook it. Not to mention, a lot of friends to share it with. This monster pizza fed 30,000 fair-goers, and a portion was donated to a local food bank.
It just goes to show that as much as we may try here in New York, Italy has and will forever be sovereign of the slice.
