I woke up the next day with my eyes swollen shut from all the salty goodness in this slow cooked Italian fast food. For those of you not familiar with porchetta it’s basically roasted pork with crispy skin and highly seasoned with aromatic herbs usually done with whole pigs. At Porchetta in the East Village they use the loins with the belly, and the skin is scored and still attached. I got the sandwich and it was super salty, but the meat was moist and tender. I would have to complain about the bread. I know it’s from a well-known bakery, but the size and texture of the bun was a little overwhelming for this sandwich. The pork is supposed to be the star of the show and I found myself ripping off half of the bun because it was just too much. It’s a great concept to have such a limited menu and to execute it well and I think they do that here, but just need a little “tweak” to catapult this pig into super hero status. So get on your horse “or pig” and get on over to Porchetta.
