Grab your parasol, flapper dress, bow tie, and straw hat and come on down to the 10th Annual Jazz Age Lawn Party, New York city’s original prohibition era inspired gathering. For two weekends this summer, Governors Island will be transformed into a swingin’ party straight out of the 1920s and 30s.
There will be numerous activities, including live performances, dance lessons, costume promenades, vintage portraits, and exhibitions of antique gramophones and old time-y motorcars. For the food and drink inclined, there’s plenty to enjoy, too. Participate in the High Court of Pie contest, with categories like “Mom’s Best,” “Best Savory,” “Most Original,” and “Hobo’s Choice” (for entry to the contest, email: govislandpie@gmail.com). In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Jazz Age Lawn Party, there will also be a selection of gourmet food trucks, as well as eats whipped up by some of NYC’s most popular chefs. Of course, no prohibition era party would be complete without a mess of fancy drinks. Enjoy a selection of St. Germain cocktails, as well Martini Sparkling Wines. In addition, there will also be beer, old fashioned lemonade, sodas, and iced coffee and tea.
Tickets range in price from $35 (general admission) to $900 (for tables for 4 with inclusive cocktails and specially prepared gourmet food, among other perks) for those looking to travel back in time in style. And just a reminder, Governors Island is only accessible by ferry, so be sure to check the schedule ahead of time (info about travel can also be found on the Jazz Age Party site).
