Newly minted bar Bob’s Your Uncle recently opened May 7 and already seems to have attracted a good following. Located on the Upper West Side, Bob’s Your Uncle is unpretentious and cozy, with just the right amount of atmosphere –from the original exposed brick to the restoration hardware-style wooden tables to the various board games strewn along the bar for patrons to enjoy (connect four, anyone?).
Even though it’s still early days, you can tell Bob’s is focused on becoming a chill neighborhood hangout. They’ve already hosted fun events, like Detox-Retox –an hour long yoga class in the bar plus your first cocktail immediately after, all for $20. They also have a “Buy a Friend a Drink Board” where you can write your name, your friend’s name and the beverage you sprung for. Not to mention, there are numerous messages from the namesake dude scribbled on the various chalkboards around the place, like “Bob Says: Alcohol helps, #drinkmore” –words of wisdom, indeed.
The bar hosts quite a lot of varied options. There are currently nine draft beers and one cider, with brands like Victory Summer Love, Greenport Blackduck Porter, and Seadog Sunfish. Oh, and that one cider I mentioned –Downeast Cider –hands down the best cider I’ve ever had. Turns out the Downeast cidery is located in my old hometown of Boston too, so a great purchase all around. As Bob’s is still quite new, the cocktail list hadn’t yet been finalized and printed up when I visited. However, the bartenders, who were super friendly and knowledgeable, were quick to compensate by whipping us up a number of great drinks.
They also have a few fun items thrown into the mix, like jello shots ($3 or 4/$10… but really, who orders just one jello shot, you know you’re getting the 4) and Bob’s Summer Lovin’ Punch ($7). Oh, and don’t forget to stop by between 2 and 7pm, Monday thru Friday for Happy Hour, where $6 will buy you numerous beverages like well drinks, Pinot Grigio, or a Mini Bob’s Pils and a Shot. And best of all, this is all listed on a giant chalk board next to the bar, right alongside with their wine list. So if you have a hankerin’ for a glass of chardonnay to go with your jello shots, then Bob is definitely your man.
Additionally, Bob’s Your Uncle takes the typical peanuts and pretzels thing up a notch with their Homemade Ranch and Chips. It’s certainly a one stop shopping sort of place, with most anything you could want, plus friendly folks, cool digs, and pooch-friendly too (we had a visit from a very sweet Boston Terrier and his owner while we were there. So bring fido along!). Apparently Bob is really a Jack-of-all-trades, and we’re totally cool with that.
