When you think “Williamsburg”, you don’t necessarily think “sports bar”. And while there may not be many, that doesn’t mean the ones that do exist aren’t great. Which brings us to today’s lesson –4th Down. Recently relocated to their new location on Grand Street, 4th Down’s new space is large and open, meaning you can see all the TVs from any one seat. And I mean all the tv’s (I counted 14 of ’em so needless to say they are well stocked in the television department). And in case having multiple games high-definitionally beaming at you from every angle wasn’t enough, there are two enormous projector screens to watch as well. It’s basically heaven for anyone who likes sports, or has a hard time just picking one thing at a time to watch on television, or really likes to bask in an artificial glow.
One thing to take note of is that they don’t serve food. They are happy, however, to offer you a large selection of take-out menus at the bar, so you can have your wings delivered right to you. What they do have, though, is arcade games (woohoo!). Fourht Down boasts a number of sports-themed games, from basketball to foosball, so you can watch sports, talk sports, and even “play” sports all at the same time. Or, you know, you could just sit and have a great beer –of which there are plenty to choose from.
Now, I like sports bars because they generally know their market and cater relentlessly to it. When you’re there you want two things — sports and a bar. Nothing fancy, just good, solid beer and maybe a shot or two for when your team wins (or loses, it really works both ways). Impressively, 4th Down manages to go above and beyond that, without loosing sight of the fact that they are a sports bar. They have a full bar, of course, with your typical selection of cans and bottles, but they also have nearly a dozen craft beers on tap, all from the New York region –how cool is that?! It was really fun to be able to hang out in a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere, but still be able try a bunch of local brews and not just be stuck with the same old selection of Coors and Bud. Plus, it’s a rare breed of bar that boasts customers in sports jerseys and skinny jeans drinking tecate in a can with a kombucha chaser (no lie, that was happening –it was awesome, this is my new favorite place).
We tried a bunch of the local brews, and they were all awesome. Seriously, each and every one of them was really good. Who knew the NY region was a mecca of craft beer? Not to mention the super chill bartender, Caesar, was nice enough to inform us of the $2 whiskey shots that were currently being offered –hell yeah, who doesn’t love booze you can buy for $2!
If you’re looking for a great place to watch the game in Williamsburg, or just want a chill spot to drink a really good beer at a great price –4th Down is a more than solid choice.
