“No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family,” Justice Anthony M. Kennedy declared for the majority in the historic Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide on Friday.
Jubilation erupted across the country! And Ben & Jerry’s renamed their beloved “Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough” flavor to “I Dough, I Dough,” in celebration of the decision.
The speciality-named flavor will only be available for a limited time at participating B&J Scoop Shops. It’ll be dished up in commemorative pint sleeves, that are also available online through the Human Rights campaign (with all proceeds benefitting the organization) for those who choose to celebrate with their pint at home.
Jostein Solheim, Ben & Jerry’s CEO, said, “Ben & Jerry’s is proud of the Supreme Court’s landmark decision against discrimination as it boldly stands up for equality for same sex couples everywhere.”
The company has long been a proponent of equal rights, outside of supporting same-sex marriage. But in that regard, they also celebrated the 2009 legalization of gay marriage in Vermont by renaming their “Chubby Hubby” flavor to “Hubby Hubby,” and even playing host to a gay wedding in Washington, D.C. for a couple tying the knot.
