Saltie is named after an oceangoing ship and also this crew’s knack for pairing salty and sweet flavors. This tiny minimalistic space is the one stop sandwich shop to go to in Williamsburg. It is about 300 square feet and there is not much room to dine-in (there is one small bench to sit on while waiting for your food and a bar that seats about 8 people max) so taking this to go is probably the best idea. Think bakery turned cafe with the help of local designer Joseph Foglia, who also designed Dressler (for all you foodies out there). The walls are exposed brick and and bright blue accents run throughout the tiny space.
The menu, much like the decor, is minimalistic in style, but bold and creative in flavor. It’s handwritten on a piece of paper and is comprised of about 7 sandwiches in total. The sandwiches have nautical names such as the Scuttlebutt, Captain’s Daughter, Ship’s Biscuit and Balmy. The innards of these sandwiches are are different but most come situated on an in-house baked foccica adorned with gorgeus coarse sea salt. Chef Caroline Fidenza (former chef of Diner) uses local and fresh ingredients to create these little sandwiches from heaven. Two of our favorites are the Scuttlebutt (hard boiled egg, feta, capers, black oilive, pickled veggies, pimento aioli) and the Balmy, which is a wildly creative sandwich with chicken liver and pickled vegetables. (Yes, we said chicken liver) These sandwiches are never short on flavor or the fresh herbs.
If you’re not in a sandwich mood, they also offer mouthwatering baked goods. Take a loaf off and grab a loaf cake with olive oil or ginger (yes, that was a bad joke), a lavender shortbread cookie, or even a chocolate brioche that is ridiculous. There is no booze here, but you can get a coffee or an in-house blended herbal iced tea. These sandwiches will set you back about 10 bucks and they are cash only so scrounge up some change before you go there. Get your Scuttlebutt over to Saltie (had to).
