Most of us don’t want to admit it, but the cold months are steadily creeping up on us. With that scary fact in mind, what better way to cope than with alcohol. We found five hot cocktails that will help you get through the cold winter months and give you a nice little buzz. Not only are these cocktails delicious, but they are inspiring. You may want to replicate some of these at your next holiday party. Here are 5 places in NYC you will want to bundle up at and sip on a soothing, delicious hot cocktail (in random order):
This little Union Square bar has amazing charm and a freakishly good-looking after work crowd. If you get there early enough you can get your frosty little hands on one of their hot, spiked apple ciders to warm you up. This seasonal drink started about three years ago when people would come in from the farmer’s market with hot cider and ask for a shot of Jameson to throw in there. One of their bartenders decided to bring their own crock-pot in and make some cider drinks of their own. Brilliant. They make a crock-pot apple cider and jazz it up with fresh cinnamon, some apples, cloves, sage, oranges and, of course, a healthy shot of whiskey. It’s the perfect drink when you are cold, have a cold or just want to get stone cold drunk. Go get a hot, spiked cider from this place.
So here’s one for the kids (not really). This New York staple restaurant has an awesome hot chocolate martini. Yeah, you heard us correctly. It’s a silky house-made dark hot chocolate with Stoli Vanil Vodka and amaretto. Each sip is bitter and sweet and has a hint of almond flavor. It’s totally soul soothing. Get there.
This drink was named after a regular bar patron and features Sailor Jerry Rum, hot butter, and secret spice mix. We couldn’t get all the deets, but we do know there is cinnamon, nutmeg, and some eastern spices in there some where. It’s buttery and rich and the rum adds a little sweet, alcoholic flavor. Go check out brunch at this West Village hot spot on a cold day and order one of these hot buttered rums. It will warm you right up.
This cocktail will cure the common cold. No joke, if you’re not feeling well get over here and order the Founder’s Toddy. It’s s an apple brandy and rye-based hot tea that’s finished off with a bit of Demerara sugar, lemon and cloves. What is Demerara sugar? Well, it’s a large-grained, somewhat crunchy, raw sugar with origins in Guyana (a colony formerly called Demerara). Either way, it’s sweet and delicious just like this drink. It will warm you through and through and take care of that scratchy sore throat, too.
This one made the list not because of its awesome bar name, but because of their no fuss, nothing fancy, straight forward Irish Coffee. We appreciate the simplicity of this drink. It’s basically coffee, Damerara sugar, Clontarf Irish Whiskey, whipping cream and nutmeg. It’s bad ass in a glass.
