This unpretentious West Village spot has everything you need to practically move in. It is a coffee-house, beer bar, café, and arcade all in one. There are about 15 seats at the bar, in the back about 10 or so tables, and downstairs has more seating and pinball machines. The decor is really simple and candle-lit tables create the perfect setting for a date. “Beer art” is strung in the back and put us in a slight trance when paired with the awesome smell of freshly brewed coffee in the air.
They don’t just serve coffee though and depending on the time of day you’ll find yourself torn between a Madagascar vanilla bean latte or an awesome local craft beer (how does one brew on such a decision?). After you get your coffee or your beer (we won’t judge either way), you’ll want to eat. And the thing you should try is the fried chicken sandwich (it will change your life). It’s a breast of crispy fried chicken goodness, with bacon, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, and a Cajun aioli. All of this is stuffed between a freshly baked bun and comes with fries on the side. The crunchy coating on that chicken is something fierce and quite memorable (even if you’re drunk). If you like all the melted cheddar and crunchiness on that sandwich you should try their beer cheese as well. It’s basically a spreadable cheese, with a hint of beer and a hint of spice. It comes in a cute little mason jar with some crunchy toast points. Cheezsus!
While eating and drinking, you can mosey on downstairs and get your pinball on. The more you drink the more fun pinball becomes. Challenge your friends and make drunk bets on who is going to win. As you can see, this place has it all. Awesome coffee, awesome beers, awesome food and bar sports (pinball is a bar sport, don’t deny it). There is nothing uptight about Upright Brew House, so get there!
